Pirates of the Caribbean
Ancient Greek Pirates

Ancient Greece is thought to be one of the greatest ancient civilisations however even this great nation was plagued by 'sea robber's. The Aegean, like the Caribbean, was ideal for pirates because of its countless tiny islands and inlets from which they could prey on passing merchant ships undetected.  These pirates also attacked unprotected villages kidnapping people to sell as slaves.

Pirate attacks were recorded on Greek Bowls and vases. Athenian Drinking Bowls were painted over 2,500 years ago, when pirating was common and there was no distinction between piracy and warfare.

Pheonician ships carrying luxury goods through and around the Mediterranian were one of the obvious targets for ancient pirates. Pirates, if luck was pn thier side, captured a cargo of silver which they used to make Pheonician coins.
